Over the last decade JSC “VNII “Signal” has developed the following wheeled and track fire control systems of tube and rocket artillery battalion/battery of the third generation as a leading designer of artillery fire control systems (AFCS):
- 1V12-3 (“Mashina-M”), 1V12M-3 (“Faltset-M”), 1V197 systems on the base of “MLTBu”;
- 1V126 (“Kapustnik-B”) systems on the base of “BTR-80” and “Ural-4320”.
At present JSC “VNII “Signal” modernize artillery fire control systems being into operation to provide their integration with STCS (single tactical control system). The Institute is also developing advanced fire control systems for self-propelled artillery to perform command and control of artillery units and new-formed brigades on the base of a single unified command and control vehicle.

The designed systems provide complete cycle of automated control of battalion/battery, consisting of four 8-gun batteries (i.e. 32-gun battalion).
Artillery fire control system of new generation provides time-to-fire of 3 minutes from the move and less than 1 minute from the prepared fire position, day and night combat operation under any weather conditions, and automated control of counter-fire maneuver of the unit as a whole and of every single piece of artillery ordnance. Automation cycle terminates by aiming, laying and fire opening of every single gun/MLRS CV of the battery.
The above mentioned functions are available due to automated guidance and fire control systems (AGFCS), specially designed by “VNII “Signal”, which are mounted at a fire weapon directly.
AGFCS performance capabilities:
- Initial orientation (Gyrocompass mode).
- Initial coordinates spotting by SNE equipment.
- Target designation receiving and autonomous calculation of fire settings.
- Automated laying and laying recovery in the both planes are available in case of integration with gun laying drives.
- Operations with digital terrain map displayed by onboard computer are available.
- Integration with muzzle velocity radar (MVR) is available.
- The system is easy adjusted.
AGFCS provides:
- indirect fire at the highest fire rate during day and night under any weather conditions, including cases when aiming point is invisible;
- dispersed SPG fire order;
- counter fire maneuver and autonomous calculating of SPG current coordinates at the new fire position;
- autonomous calculations of indirect fire settings.
Self-orienting gyro course-roll indicating system (SOGCRIS) from Gamma survey and navigation system is the main component part of “Uspekh” AGFCS.
SOGCRIS measures gun/cluster of tubes position angles in 3 planes, provides laying and laying recovery of gun/cluster of tubes while firing, finds orienting direction (azimuth) of a fire weapon directional axis, and keeps azimuth while the ordnance is moving/is being moved.
The following AGFCS versions have been developed:
- “Uspekh-R” – for “Uragan”, “Grad”, “Smerch” MLRS;
- “Uspekh-S” – for “Msta-S” SPG and its update versions;
- “Uspekh-B” – for tube wheeled and self-propelled guns.
Combined combat use of FCS and “Uspekh” AGFCS provides full prepared fire accuracy by 20-30%, 4-6 times reduction of fire preparation time, target hit capability increase by 30-40%, 3-times increase of artillery unit survivability.
